Alan Scarfe, the esteemed British-Canadian actor renowned for his iconic villainous portrayals in films like Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III, as well as his memorable role as Dr. Bradley Talmadge in the sci-fi series Seven Days, has passed away at the age of 77.
Scarfe succumbed to colon cancer on April 28 at his residence in Longueuil, Quebec, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe. Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe had a prolific career spanning various roles in the entertainment industry. Notably, he graced the Star Trek universe with his presence, portraying characters like Tokath and Admiral Mendak in The Next Generation, and Magistrate Augris in Voyager.
In a 2007 interview, Scarfe reflected on his experiences in science fiction, noting its appeal to actors with a strong stage background due to the larger-than-life performances required. He emphasized the necessity for intensity, stating, “You can’t really mumble if you’re a Klingon.”
Scarfe’s legacy extends beyond his sci-fi roles. He began his career in theatre, training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and later serving as associate director at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. He spent two decades performing in numerous Shakespearean productions across Europe, the US, and Canada, including notable stints at the Stratford Festival and the Shaw Festival.
On screen, Scarfe delivered captivating performances, including his portrayal of the sinister Nigel Griffith in Double Impact, the cunning Herman Walters in Lethal Weapon III, and his recurring role as Dr. Bradley Talmadge in Seven Days.
