Islamabad, Feb 28: The Sindh government risks losing wheat valued at Rs. 150 billion due to the prolonged storage of over 1.37 million metric tons in warehouses. Despite mounting concerns, the authorities have yet to authorize the release of these stocks, raising fears of financial and food security issues.

The provincial Food Department has urged the Chief Minister to take immediate action, emphasizing that the stored wheat from the 2022-23 and 2024 harvests is at risk of spoilage. Prolonged storage not only deteriorates grain quality but also increases the likelihood of wastage, potentially deepening the province’s food supply challenges.

Meanwhile, farmers have expressed serious concerns over the delay in selling the stored wheat. They warn that holding onto the old stock will disrupt market dynamics, leading to lower demand for the new harvest. This situation could negatively impact wheat prices, directly affecting farmers’ earnings and financial stability.

Experts stress that an immediate decision is necessary to prevent massive losses and market instability. If the government fails to act, the consequences could be severe, including food shortages, rising wheat prices, and financial strain on the province.

To safeguard both the economy and the agricultural sector, authorities must release the wheat stock promptly. The longer the delay, the greater the financial burden on the government and the farmers who rely on stable market conditions for their livelihood.
