Islamabad, Sep 3: Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system has overtaken Windows 10 in usage among Steam users for the first time since its release in 2021, potentially marking a turning point in the new OS’s adoption rate, at least for gaming.

Even after Microsoft declared that it would stop supporting Windows 10 in October 2025, the older operating system was still quite popular among users. But the most recent information from Steam’s August hardware survey indicates a change.

While Windows 10 usage decreased by a similar amount to 47%, Windows 11 usage increased by more than 3% to reach 49%. In the meantime, August saw a comparatively steady adoption of Linux and macOS among Steam users.

Beyond just the gaming sector, Windows 11 is becoming more and more popular on the internet as a whole. Windows 11’s market share increased significantly from 23% in July 2023 to approximately 32% in August 2024, according to StatCounter data.

Although Microsoft is pleased with this progress, it is important to note that Windows 11’s adoption has been slower than that of its predecessor. Over 400 million machines were running Windows 11 at the time, according to data leaks from October.
