Islamabad, Oct 25: The first-ever Psychological Wellness & Counseling Cell (PWCC) has been established at the University of Sindh (SU) at the Department of Psychology, marking a significant milestone in tackling mental health issues.

The goal of this innovative project is to offer counseling services to young people and students throughout Sindh.

In a ceremony held in conjunction with World Mental Health Day, SU Vice-Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro formally launched the PWCC.

The Department of Psychology commemorated the event with an awareness walk and a poster show in addition to the inauguration.

The department’s main hall hosted the poster display, which highlighted the faculty and student initiatives to use art to promote positive thinking and increase awareness of mental health issues.

World Mental Health Day VC Dr. Kalhoro spoke at the gathering and stressed the value of developing deep connections, forgiving others, and helping others as essential components of preserving mental wellness.

He applauded the creativity and dedication of the students and said that artistic expression could have a profound impact on public awareness and mental health advocacy.

“Making posters is an art and the art has a unique ability to touch minds and hearts, making it an effective tool for spreading awareness,” he remarked.

He also shed light on the global challenge of schizophrenia and noted that approximately 26 million people lived with the condition worldwide, often facing reduced life expectancy due to associated physical illnesses and smoking.

The poster exhibition featured works from around 40 psychology students, with each piece focusing on the importance of staying healthy in challenging environments.

The posters’ provocative themes prompted visitors to consider life’s fundamental principles, like love, hope, tolerance, and compassion.

According to Dr. Muniza Malik, chairperson of the psychology department, a happy and satisfying existence was derived from fundamental human values rather than worldly wealth.

She emphasized the department’s longtime custom of commemorating World Mental Health Day, with workplace mental health serving as this year’s topic.

The World Federation of Mental Health established World Mental Health Day in 1992, and it has since grown into a yearly occasion with the goal of increasing global awareness of mental health concerns and promoting improved mental health care.
