ISLAMABAD, AUGUST  6: According to a paper from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), of the major social media sites, X (previously Twitter) has the lowest rate of blocking inappropriate and illegal information.

PTA processed 69,372 URLs to X between January 2021 and June 2024, however the platform only restricted 41,414 URLs, yielding a 59.70 percent compliance rate.

On the other hand, TikTok was the platform with the highest compliance rate, blocking 107,003 out of 109,359 URLs, or 97.85 percent of the total. This puts TikTok far ahead of other big sites in terms of complying with the PTA’s requests for content banning. The PTA has identified content in a number of categories, such as libelous, immoral, anti-Islamic, sectarian, anti-security and defense, and contempt of court.

Just 41,414 of the 69,372 URLs that were submitted to X for blocking were truly blacklisted.

Facebook had a robust compliance rate as well, obtaining an 84.88% compliance rate by blocking 79,904 out of 94,141 URLs. Instagram blacklisted 18,260 out of 21,333 URLs, with a compliance percentage of 85.60%, not far behind. These numbers suggest that these platforms nevertheless adhere to the PTA’s requests to a substantial extent, despite not being in the top.
