Islamabad, Dec 18; The role of user-generated content has become more crucial than ever, especially with the rise of AI-generated content online. Platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and other social media serve as major hubs for original content created by individuals, and its use in AI training has sparked controversy for some time. In response, YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows creators to control whether their videos are used for AI training.
While Google’s Gemini AI continues to summarize YouTube videos, creators are concerned that their hard work could be used to train AI models without proper compensation. To address these concerns, YouTube has introduced a new setting in Creator Studio, as reported by TechCrunch.
This “Third-party training” option lets content creators and rights holders decide if their videos can be used by third parties for AI purposes, including those flagged by Content ID. The feature also comes with detailed support documentation.
However, this update only affects third-party use, and YouTube has not explicitly mentioned whether it will continue to use videos for its own AI models, such as Gemini. The announcement suggests that while creators may gain control over third-party access, Google could still utilize its vast video library for internal AI projects.
YouTube also emphasizes that scraping videos is against its policies. However, the platform’s API access could still allow determined AI developers to misuse its content. Although the new setting is a step in the right direction, it’s not a foolproof solution. For AI development to remain ethical, tech companies must adhere to responsible practices while lawmakers catch up with the rapidly evolving field.
