Islamabad, May 2, 2025: Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook and Instagram, has introduced its first independent AI assistant app, stepping directly into competition with ChatGPT by offering users direct access to its powerful generative AI tools.
In a recent Instagram video, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced, “Over a billion people now use Meta AI across our platforms, so we’ve built a brand-new standalone Meta AI app for everyone to explore.”
Zuckerberg highlighted that this app is designed to serve as a personal AI companion, primarily interacting through voice conversations and tailored specifically to each user’s needs.
“At the start, the app will only know basic details about your interests,” Zuckerberg explained. “But as you use it, you’ll be able to share much more — about yourself and the people you care about — across Meta’s platforms if you choose.”
True to Meta’s social media roots, the app includes a social feed where users can view AI-generated posts from others.
Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox, speaking at LlamaCon (Meta’s developer event centered on its open-source Llama AI model), said, “We learn by watching each other, so we built this sharing right into the app. You can share your prompts and your AI-generated creations — it’s incredibly fun.”
Interestingly, the new app also replaces Meta View as the companion for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, allowing seamless conversation across glasses, the mobile app, and desktop.
Cox emphasized, “We focused heavily on the voice experience, making it as natural as possible — you can hear pauses, laughter, real dialogue — just like a regular phone call.”
However, the assistant currently cannot browse the web, meaning questions about live events or current sports scores are not yet supported.

Users can allow Meta AI to learn more about them by granting access to their Instagram and Facebook activities.
“It can even remember details you provide, like your children’s names or your partner’s birthday,” Cox noted.
At LlamaCon, Meta also highlighted the flexibility of its Llama AI model, emphasizing its open-source nature. This allows developers to modify and adapt the software to meet their specific needs.
Zuckerberg added, “You can combine the smartest elements from various models to create exactly what fits your goals — and that’s incredibly powerful.”
