Islamabad, Oct Babar Azam Captaincy Replacement Mohsin Naqvi’s Update
In the wake of Babar Azam’s resignation as Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has addressed the speculation surrounding his successor.
Babar, recognized as one of Pakistan’s leading batsmen, announced his resignation last week, citing the pressures of captaincy and a desire to focus more on his batting.
Naqvi emphasized the importance of the captaincy during a recent media briefing, urging careful consideration in the selection process. “I have told them to take a decision after careful consideration because the captain’s position is important,” he stated.
This isn’t the first instance of Babar stepping down; his initial captaincy tenure ended in November 2023 following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India. Despite the setback, he was reinstated in March 2024 and led the team through T20I matches against New Zealand, Ireland, and England.
During his second tenure, Babar captained Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where the team faced a historic low, exiting in the group stage after unexpected losses to the United States and India.
These results have heightened scrutiny of the team’s leadership and performance strategies. Currently, rumors suggest that wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is a potential candidate for the captaincy.
