Islamabad, Oct 2: Pakistan and Denmark have pledged to collaborate in addressing the severe impacts of climate change, as highlighted in a joint press briefing by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Danish Minister Dan Jorgensen in Islamabad.

Key Points from the Briefing:

  1. Recognition of Vulnerability: Both ministers acknowledged that their countries are significantly affected by climate change, with Pakistan, as a developing nation, seeking genuine cooperation from advanced countries like Denmark.
  2. Energy Diversification Strategy: Minister Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s potential for renewable energy generation, particularly from solar and wind sources, and indicated that strategies are being developed to diversify the country’s energy portfolio. Danish companies are expected to contribute to wind energy projects in Pakistan.
  3. Green Framework Agreement: The cooperation is framed under a green framework agreement, aimed at tackling climate change challenges while fostering economic opportunities between the two nations. This agreement is anticipated to aid Pakistan in becoming more energy-independent and economically prosperous.
  4. Advocacy for Green Transition: Minister Jorgensen reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to combating climate change, noting the need for more robust international efforts. Both nations share a vision of accelerating the green energy transition.
  5. Sindh Coastal Resilience Integrated Programme (SCRIP): In addition to bilateral cooperation, the Aga Khan Foundation and the Danish embassy have launched SCRIP, a project designed to enhance the resilience of coastal communities in Sindh against climate change and associated risks.
  6. This initiative leverages the existing presence and capabilities of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in the region.

This partnership is expected to not only address immediate climate challenges but also foster long-term economic and environmental sustainability in Pakistan.
