Islamabad, Aug 28: After the Punjab Transport Authority’s procurement tender was successfully completed, electric buses in Lahore are scheduled to start operating in December.

The announcement was made by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan that a Chinese and Pakistani company had won the contract to manufacture the buses.

The minister went on to say that the company would set up charging stations and supply 27 electric buses for a total of Rs. 15.5 billion.

The bus body and other structural components of the new electric buses are covered by a ten-year warranty, while the batteries are covered for eight years. Bilal Akbar Khan further stated that the company will give free maintenance and oversight services for the first year.

The first five routes that electric buses will run on are the ones from the Railway Station to Green Town Hamdard Chowk. The province administration declared earlier this year that it will buy 300 electric buses for Lahore. In addition, 330 electric buses will be deployed in additional Punjabi cities, which will be a significant step toward updating the region’s public transportation system.

According to a five-year plan announced by Bilal Akbar Khan, the Punjab administration intends to install 3,000 buses in the province. He disclosed that CM Punjab has given the go-ahead for a plan to establish a comprehensive public transportation network throughout Punjab.657 environmentally friendly buses will start running as part of this project in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, and other cities.
