Islamabad, Feb 12: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has instructed power distribution companies (DISCOs) and K-Electric to provide a refund of Rs. 1.23 per unit in electricity bills for February 2025. This adjustment is based on fuel charges from December 2024 for DISCOs and November 2024 for K-Electric.
Further reductions in electricity tariffs may occur in the upcoming months due to lower capacity payments and stable fuel costs. Initially, K-Electric had proposed a negative fuel charges adjustment (FCA) of Rs. 4.98 per unit. However, NEPRA revised it to negative Rs. 5.0 per unit, amounting to Rs. 7.21 billion. Additionally, Rs. 5.44 billion is still under evaluation for various cost components.
The refund will be applicable to all consumer categories, except lifeline users, domestic consumers utilizing up to 300 units, prepaid customers, agricultural consumers, and electric vehicle charging stations. However, time-of-use (ToU) domestic consumers will benefit from the adjustment. If electricity bills for February are issued before NEPRA’s notification, the refund will be carried forward to March 2025 bills.

Furthermore, NEPRA has hinted at the possibility of DISCOs, including K-Electric, refunding an additional Rs. 52 billion under the second quarterly adjustment for October-December 2024-25. This is primarily due to a reduction of Rs. 50.66 billion in capacity charges following the termination of contracts for five thermal power plants and the suspension of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project. Additionally, a stable exchange rate and declining interest rates have contributed to cost reductions.
Consumers can expect further relief in power tariffs if fuel prices remain stable and operational costs continue to decline. NEPRA remains committed to ensuring fair electricity pricing and addressing excess charges imposed on consumers. These adjustments align with the government’s broader strategy to optimize energy costs and provide financial relief to the public.
Stay updated on future tariff adjustments as NEPRA continues to evaluate cost factors affecting electricity pricing. Consumers are encouraged to monitor their bills closely to benefit from any upcoming refunds or tariff reductions.
