Islamabad, Aug 29: Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister of Energy (Power Division), declared on Thursday that the government does not plan to tax solar panels that are imported. The minister stated that the government is attempting to promote the adoption of solar panels in a brief video message released by the ministry. He claimed that although there had been many suggestions to tax solar panels, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had turned them down.

The minister also brought up the fact that the government now purchases pricey electricity from solar net metering customers, but claimed that this practice is being carried out to encourage the installation of solar power installations. The minister also stated that because electricity prices are on the rise, most agricultural tubwells have moved from grid to solar power. The minister did, however, predict that as electricity prices decline, they will probably return to using the grid.
