Islamabad, 25 Apr, 2025: Free Laptops for Students has become the headline initiative as the Punjab government unveiled its latest technology empowerment programme, aiming to distribute over 110,000 laptops to deserving learners under the Chief Minister’s Laptop Scheme 2024–25.

This academic incentive, officially confirmed by the Directorate of Public Instructions (Colleges), Punjab, is specifically designed for pupils enrolled in government-run universities, medical colleges, and higher education institutions across the province.

However, a crucial requirement has been added students must complete biometric thumb verification through NADRA’s e-Sahulat system before receiving their devices.

In the initial rollout, approximately 7,000 students from selected public institutions will be handed laptops during a formal distribution ceremony scheduled for 30 April 2025. The event will mark the symbolic beginning of the broader scheme

To safeguard fairness and authenticity, the Higher Education Department (HED) has joined hands with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to conduct identity verification.

NADRA officials began facilitating this process at designated campuses starting from 24 April 2025. This collaboration aims to prevent misuse and ensure that only eligible students benefit from the distribution.

All expenses related to the biometric checks are being handled by the Higher Education Department, with NADRA instructed to submit formal reimbursement claims.

Meanwhile, college and university administrations have been tasked with guiding students through the verification process promptly, ensuring compliance ahead of the distribution ceremony.

The scheme reflects the provincial government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing digital literacy and academic accessibility for young people.

By integrating technology into the learning environment, the authorities hope to better equip the next generation with tools needed for the modern world.

Officials emphasised that this transparent approach would not only eliminate fraudulent claims but also strengthen trust in the scheme’s management.
