Islamabad, Jan 10: A new motorbike patrol service has been launched as part of a pilot project aimed at bolstering security and surveillance along Pakistan’s motorways.

Initiated under the guidance of Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, this service is designed to strengthen safety measures and provide more efficient monitoring on the roads.

The pilot project envisions the deployment of 30 to 35 motorbikes, patrolling different motorway sectors simultaneously, using the existing resources of the Motorway Police. This is just the first step, with plans to expand the service as it gains momentum.

Minister Khan highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in ensuring the success of this initiative. To achieve this, he urged a collaborative approach between the National Highway Authority (NHA), Motorway Police, Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and local district police.

Their collective involvement is seen as crucial in enhancing the effectiveness of security measures and addressing challenges such as theft of protective fencing on the motorways.

The minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to prevent such thefts and safeguard infrastructure.

In a move to further empower the Motorway Police, Abdul Aleem Khan proposed key amendments to existing laws.

These amendments aim to grant the police greater authority and responsibility, especially in areas with higher crime rates and frequent fence thefts.

The  increasing accountability for the NHA and Motorway Police in these regions, the government hopes to ensure prompt action and better protection for motorists.

The minister stressed that any damaged or stolen fences must be swiftly replaced to maintain safety.

The Federal Minister instructed the Inspector General (IG) of Motorway Police to collaborate with local authorities to investigate and follow up on fence theft cases.

The Secretary of Communications must submit a detailed report on the coordinated efforts within a week to ensure smooth implementation.

This proactive strategy aims to significantly improve motorway security, ensuring safer travel for all citizens.
