Islamabad, Aug 26: Weeks after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif announced a reduction of Rs14 per unit in August and September electricity bills for Punjab and Islamabad consumers, the government began preparing to burden customers with an additional Rs46 billion as part of a quarterly adjustment on Monday.
The most recent increase in power bills, which run from April to June, ask for Rs22 billion to be paid to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as capacity payments.
In addition, an additional Rs. 10 billion will be levied for the transmission and distribution of energy, with an additional Rs. 14 billion to be collected from consumers individually.
The application for the IPPs would be the subject of a hearing by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority today.
