Islamabad, Jan 15: Karachi has successfully regained its place in the prestigious “C40 Cities” network after a three-year suspension, marking a significant milestone for the city’s climate action efforts.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced on Tuesday Karachi’s renewed commitment to addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.
The C40 Cities network, a global coalition of cities striving to combat climate change, had suspended Karachi’s membership in 2022 due to concerns over its environmental strategies.
However, following substantial efforts, the city’s membership has now been reinstated, highlighting the progress Karachi has made toward creating a greener and more sustainable urban environment.

In a statement, Mayor Wahab shared that Mark Watts, the executive director of the C40 Cities Climate Group, had sent a letter recognizing Karachi’s work on developing a Paris-Aligned Climate Action Plan (CAP).
Watts also expressed confidence that Karachi would successfully meet the Leadership Standards for the 2021-2024 period by the March 2025 deadline, which includes the completion and implementation of the CAP.
The CAP, designed to align with global climate goals, outlines the city’s strategies to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change impacts.
The mayor emphasized the urgency of accelerating the city’s climate initiatives, stating that Karachi must now expedite its efforts to fulfill all C40 membership requirements. He highlighted the importance of continuing to develop and implement effective strategies that align with international environmental standards. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a sustainable future for Karachi by adhering to these global climate frameworks.
This achievement places Karachi among the world’s leading cities dedicated to addressing climate change. It also sets the stage for increased collaboration with other C40 cities, allowing Karachi to benefit from shared knowledge, resources, and best practices in climate action.
By regaining its C40 membership, Karachi has positioned itself as a forward-thinking metropolis ready to tackle the challenges of climate change head-on, ensuring a greener, more resilient city for future generations.
