ABBOTTABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) and Balakot tehsil administration have officially reopened access to Naran after a prolonged five-month closure due to intense winter snowfall.

Tourist arrangements are expected to be finalized within the next three days, local authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Naran, a popular summer retreat nestled in the upper reaches of the Kaghan Valley in Mansehra District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had been closed to traffic since November last year following heavy snow accumulation.

Situated at an elevation of 2,409 meters, Naran attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors annually.

Officials said the NHA successfully cleared major glaciers blocking the Kaghan Highway, restoring traffic flow to the region.

“The road has now been reopened up to Naran after significant glacier-cutting operations,” the Mansehra District Police Officer stated.

Tourist Season Set to Begin

With warmer weather returning, preparations are underway to welcome tourists for the summer season.

The Balakot tehsil administration has advised the public to wait until weather conditions improve and essential facilities are in place before traveling to Naran.

Authorities indicated that final arrangements to host tourists—such as lodging, security, and road safety measures—would be completed within three days. Once ready, tourists will be allowed to travel to the scenic valley.

Naran also serves as a key transit point for travelers heading toward Gilgit-Hunza during the summer via Babusar Pass, which remains closed during winter months due to snow.

The NHA is currently working to open the highway stretch leading to Babusar Top, located approximately 65 kilometers from Naran.

During winter, temperatures in Naran routinely dip below zero, accompanied by heavy snowfall that renders the region inaccessible.

In contrast, summer brings cooler weather, with average daytime temperatures rarely exceeding 15°C and frequent rain showers.
