Islamabad, Feb 22: Several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced a much-needed spell of rain and snowfall on Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing a significant drop in temperatures. The mountainous regions saw freezing conditions, while major roads were affected due to heavy snowfall, causing travel disruptions.

Abbottabad and its surrounding tourist hotspots, including Thandiyani, Nathiagali, and Ayubia, recorded their heaviest snowfall of the season. Reports indicate that Thandiyani received nearly one foot of snow, whereas the Galiyat region saw at least nine inches. The snowfall, which began late Wednesday, continued intermittently until Thursday afternoon, creating a mesmerizing winter landscape but also leading to mobility issues for locals and visitors.

Rescue 1122 teams, in collaboration with the Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) and local police, actively worked to clear snow-covered roads and assist stranded travelers. Authorities have advised tourists to avoid traveling to Galiyat after sunset and to seek updates from local police and the GDA before planning their trip to ensure safety. Travelers are also encouraged to equip their vehicles with snow chains to navigate slippery roads effectively.

The upper regions of the Hazara division, including Kaghan, Konsh, and Siran valleys, witnessed heavy snowfall, while the lower areas experienced persistent rainfall. Several link roads connecting remote villages to the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road became impassable due to snow accumulation, causing transportation issues for residents.

Meanwhile, Mansehra, Torghar, Kolai-Palas, Upper Kohistan, and Lower Kohistan received substantial rainfall, effectively ending the prolonged dry spell that had affected the region. The downpour provided much-needed relief to the agricultural sector, replenishing water reserves and improving soil moisture levels.

In Upper Dir, snowfall blanketed Dir town for the first time this season. The surrounding areas, including the Lowari Tunnel region, received between seven and ten inches of snow. The scenic beauty attracted nature enthusiasts, but authorities have warned travelers to take necessary precautions due to the hazardous driving conditions.

The recent spell of winter precipitation has not only enhanced the region’s natural beauty but also brought challenges in terms of transportation and daily life. Authorities continue to work diligently to clear major routes and ensure the safety of residents and tourists. Travelers planning a visit to the affected areas are urged to stay informed about weather updates and road conditions before embarking on their journey.
