Islamabad, Feb 18: Lahore is taking a significant step towards a greener future by receiving 11 electric buses from China, as part of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the city’s public transportation. These buses are expected to greatly reduce carbon emissions and offer residents a cleaner, more sustainable way to commute.

Officials from the transport department have confirmed that an additional 16 electric buses will soon arrive from Karachi, bringing the total number of electric buses to 27 in the first phase of this ambitious pilot project.

The much-anticipated electric bus service is scheduled for inauguration on February 19 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The event marks the beginning of a new era in eco-friendly transport options for the city. Each electric bus is designed to accommodate up to 60 passengers, providing a modern and comfortable travel experience while supporting the city’s push for a more sustainable future. To ensure the smooth operation of these buses, a dedicated charging station will be set up in the Green Town area of Lahore.

The transport company behind the project will transfer the buses to the Punjab Transport Department, which will oversee their day-to-day operations. The electric buses will not only offer a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles, but they will also contribute to improving the overall air quality in Lahore. This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Punjab government to promote environmentally friendly transportation options across the province.

The Punjab government has set a goal of acquiring 300 electric buses for Lahore, a key part of the province’s broader vision to modernize its public transportation system and reduce its environmental footprint.

The introduction of electric buses in Lahore signals a positive shift towards cleaner, more sustainable urban mobility. With ongoing plans to expand this service, Lahore is well on its way to becoming a model for eco-friendly transportation in Pakistan.
