Islamabad, Jan 5: A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the central United States, affecting over 60 million people, with blizzard conditions, ice, and frigid temperatures predicted for the eastern half of the country through Monday. Meteorologists have issued winter storm warnings for a 1,500-mile stretch, from western Kansas to Maryland, with heavy snow and damaging ice expected.

Severe Travel Disruptions and Hazardous Conditions

As the storm progresses, significant travel disruptions are already occurring. Kansas City International Airport has temporarily shut down, and flight operations were halted due to rapid ice accumulation. States such as New York and Pennsylvania are facing lake-effect snow, which could dump up to four feet of snow. The NWS also warned of whiteout conditions and hazardous roads that could make travel nearly impossible.

Ice, Freezing Rain, and Power Outages

Freezing rain and sleet from Kansas to Virginia are expected to coat roads with thick ice, posing risks to travel and power infrastructure. Widespread tree damage and long-lasting power outages are anticipated, especially in areas still recovering from previous natural disasters, such as Kentucky. With temperatures expected to drop to below zero Fahrenheit, combined with strong winds, residents are urged to take immediate precautions and prepare for prolonged disruptions.

Emergency Declarations and State Preparations

In response to the storm, state of emergency declarations has been issued by the governors of Missouri and Virginia. Authorities are warning residents to stay informed and take necessary steps to protect themselves and their families from the severe weather and related hazards.
