Islamabad, Jan 11: Pakistani cueist Mohammad Asif delivered a stunning performance to secure the third SAARC Snooker Championship title in Colombo on Friday, further cementing his status as one of South Asia’s most accomplished snooker players. Asif triumphed with a commanding 5-0 victory against Sri Lanka’s Thaha Irshath in the final, not dropping a single frame throughout the match.

The victory adds to Asif’s illustrious career, marking his eighth major title and reaffirming his position at the pinnacle of regional snooker. His precision, composure, and technical brilliance were on full display, leaving his opponent with no opportunity to mount a challenge.

A Dominant Journey to the Title

Asif’s path to the championship featured a nail-biting all-Pakistan semi-final against compatriot Mohammad Naseem Akhtar. Despite Naseem’s spirited effort, Asif’s experience and skill prevailed, securing a 5-3 win and setting the stage for the final.

In the decisive match against Irshath, Asif showcased flawless gameplay, demonstrating the mental toughness and expertise that have made him a household name in the sport. His unyielding focus throughout the tournament underscored his reputation as a fierce competitor on the snooker circuit.

The win comes on the heels of Asif’s recent success at the IBSF World Snooker Championship in November, where he claimed his third world title with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Iran’s Ali Gharahgozlou. Although his bid for a second title in the same tournament ended in the quarter-finals against Wales’ Philip Williams, his triumph in Colombo underscores his ability to bounce back and maintain his legacy of excellence.

Recognition and Legacy

Asif’s remarkable achievement drew widespread praise, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari extending their congratulations. Both leaders commended his dedication and expressed pride in his continued success, which serves as an inspiration to young Pakistani players.

At 41 years old, Asif remains a beacon of excellence, his consistent performances setting a high bar for snooker in the region. His legacy is not just defined by his numerous titles but also by his role in inspiring the next generation of Pakistani cueists.

With this latest triumph, Mohammad Asif solidifies his place as a true snooker legend in South Asia, his achievements a testament to his resilience, skill, and unwavering dedication to the sport.
