Islamabad, Jan 22: The 49th National Snooker Championship kicked off with grandeur on a sunny Tuesday at Karachi’s premier Snooker Arena, located within the National Bank Sports Complex. The tournament opened under the watchful eyes of the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Chairman Alamgir Sheikh and an array of dignitaries from Pakistan’s vibrant sports fraternity.
At the heart of this prestigious event is defending champion Asjad Iqbal, who is at the forefront of an elite group of 48 competitors. These athletes are battling not only for the title of Pakistan’s top snooker player but also for a substantial prize fund that has captured the attention of sports enthusiasts nationwide.
Enhanced Prize Fund Sparks Intense Competition
This year, the stakes are higher than ever with a total prize pool of Rs 525,000. The champion of the tournament will secure a hefty Rs 200,000, setting a new precedent for the rewards at stake. The runner-up is set to claim Rs 100,000, while the semi-finalists and quarter-finalists will receive Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively.
An additional Rs 25,000 is reserved for the player who achieves the highest break of the tournament, injecting further excitement and competition among the participants.
Showcasing the Future of Snooker
A notable feature of this year’s championship is the inclusion of five junior champions who have been given direct entries, underscoring the championship’s role in nurturing and showcasing emerging talent. This initiative highlights the PBSA’s commitment to developing the next generation of snooker talent, providing them with a platform to shine against seasoned professionals.

During a press briefing, PBSA Chairman Alamgir Sheikh emphasized the renewed efforts to garner governmental support for snooker athletes who have represented Pakistan on international platforms. Sheikh detailed ongoing negotiations to secure financial recognition for achievements such as three-time World Champion Muhammad Asif and rising star Ahsan Ramzan.
