The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the NDMA has reported a substantial activity from the eastern Indian side, indicating severe cloud bursts that may affect Pakistani territories, based on predictive modeling.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated in a news release that “repeated early warnings have been shared with all provinces, and moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to start over the upper catchments of all major rivers, particularly Sutlej, Ravi & Chenab from July 2, 2024.”Additionally, the NDMA released a lightning advisory predicting that during the week of July 5–7, lightning was predicted to impact several cities in South and Central Punjab as well as Islamabad.

Rapid increases in water levels, flash floods, and urban flooding in populated areas could result from this. The River Sutlej is expected to experience low to medium level flooding due to the predicted rainfall, the NDMA warned. By July 5, water levels are expected to reach low flood levels, or about 50,000 cusecs, and by July 10, 2024, high flood levels, or about 120,000 cusecs. For the purpose of ensuring readiness and response to this possible disaster, the NDMA is collaborating closely with federal and provincial agencies. The general population was urged to exercise caution and heed local authorities’ orders.

The public was advised by the NDMA to keep informed, download the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app for timely alerts, keep a close eye on weather reports and updates regarding the flood situation, obey orders, leave right away if local authorities issue them, protect yourself from floodwater, and avoid coming into contact with floodwater that may be contaminated, contain debris or electrical wires.

Create an emergency kit with necessary supplies, decide on a safe place, and collaborate with your family to develop evacuation plans. It is urged that in the event of severe rains and potential floods, travelers should avoid making needless travel plans.
