Islamabad, Feb 21: A team of postgraduate students from NED University has made a groundbreaking advancement in Pakistan’s automotive sector by unveiling a self-driving electric vehicle. This innovation is expected to make a significant impact on the country’s transportation industry.

The engineering students successfully designed a driverless car capable of independently reaching its assigned destination, a technology widely used globally but new to Pakistan.

Designed for Pakistan’s Roads

Recognizing the challenges of local road conditions, the team ensured their vehicle is equipped with an advanced system to detect and respond to potholes and uneven surfaces. This feature enhances the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving in Pakistan’s unique infrastructure.

A faculty supervisor overseeing the project emphasized the vast potential of this technology, not just for urban transport but also for intercity travel. He highlighted that the self-driving system could be integrated into heavy-duty vehicles, including buses and trucks, transforming the future of the country’s transportation sector.

Advancing Electric Vehicle Technology

This is not the first time NED students have demonstrated their expertise in electric vehicle development. In 2021, a group of students successfully built Pakistan’s second Formula Electric Sports Car, following the first one created by NUST.

One of the students explained that the project was initially envisioned by their seniors in the engineering department. The vehicle, developed at a cost of approximately Rs3.5 million, boasts a top speed of 120 km/h, with an average operational speed of 60–70 km/h. Despite challenges related to battery backup and motor efficiency, the team successfully completed the project, marking another milestone in Pakistan’s automotive innovation.

A Step Towards a Smarter Future

With the development of a driverless electric vehicle, NED University students have taken a major step toward revolutionizing Pakistan’s transportation industry. This achievement highlights the country’s growing potential in advanced automotive technology and sets the stage for future innovations in autonomous and electric vehicles.
