Islamabad, Aug 29: Chairman of the National High Authority (NHA), Arshad Majeed Mohmand, disclosed that the NHA only gets 13% of the toll revenue from its roadways at the moment.

He said this to Abdul Aleem Khan, the Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization, and the Board of Investment, at a briefing on Wednesday. In accordance with directives from the Federal Minister for Communications, he continued, the NHA has started a process of improvement and is putting out both immediate and long-term policy solutions to deal with the problem.

According to Abdul Aleem Khan, the NHA would not put up with ineptitude or corruption. He proposed that in places where revenue collection is problematic, shifting toll collecting to the private sector could be the solution. In order to improve the institution’s performance and increase revenue and efficiency, he gave the National Highway Authority the authority to set annual revenue targets.

Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized that the nation is building a system of excellent motorways and highways. The minister went on to say that no freeway with fewer than six lanes would be constructed in the future. He declared that future motorways will have six lanes or more, citing the routes from Karachi to Sukkur and Sialkot to Kharian-Islamabad as two of the major projects. He gave the NHA orders to guarantee that every motorway has three lanes in each direction, increase revenue by establishing toll plazas, and strictly enforce axle load limits.
