Islamabad, Nov 30: Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has introduced free WiFi services at major parks and recreational areas across the city. The initiative, which began with the launch at Frere Hall, aims to provide seamless internet access for citizens, fostering connectivity in popular outdoor venues.
During the inauguration, Mayor Wahab announced that the service would soon expand to other significant locations such as Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim, Kidney Hill Park, Hill Park, Safari Park, and Lake Park, all managed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
Highlighting the growing reliance on smartphones, the Mayor stated, “Cities worldwide offer such amenities, and Karachi is now joining their ranks.” He emphasized the need for equal access to modern facilities, questioning why such offerings are often limited to elite spaces like clubs while being absent in parks accessible to lower and middle-income groups.
The WiFi facility at Frere Hall, which supports 2,000 users simultaneously and operates 24/7, is part of a broader effort to make public spaces more inclusive. Plans are underway to extend similar services to other recreational spots, ensuring accessibility for all residents.
In addition to the WiFi rollout, Mayor Wahab unveiled cultural initiatives at Frere Hall. These include air-conditioning the library section, offering music lessons for instruments like the tabla, piano, and sitar, and hosting traditional music performances to enhance the site’s cultural appeal. These measures aim to make Karachi’s public spaces both technologically advanced and culturally vibrant.
