Islamabad, Sep 26: Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, has emphasized the need for fresh talent to gradually replace aging veterans like Sarfaraz Ahmed in the national squad.

During a commentary session at the Champions One-Day Cup, Gillespie praised Sarfaraz for his dedication and leadership but acknowledged that age is catching up with the former captain.

“Sarfaraz has been a wonderful servant and has captained the country very well,” Gillespie said, while noting, “Saifi isn’t getting any younger. At some point, we’re going to need to start exploring and offering opportunities to other players.”

Gillespie also pointed to the need for greater depth in Pakistan’s spin bowling department, citing the role of the domestic structure and Shaheens in nurturing new talent.

He defended the current squad, cautioning against making rash changes based on one bad series, noting that the players’ potential should not be dismissed due to temporary lapses in performance.

However, fans have noticed a contradiction in Gillespie’s remarks, as the recently announced 15-man squad for the England Test series still includes Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Looking ahead, Gillespie remains optimistic about the young talent coming through, especially in the spin department, and believes that touring with experienced players like Shaheen Afridi will provide crucial learning opportunities for newcomers
