Islamabad, Sep 25: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to encouraging the creation of a secure, environmentally friendly, effective, and sustainable transportation network within its borders.

In a video message to the Global Sustainable Transport Forum-2024, which is taking place in Beijing on September 25–26, 2024, the president pledged that Pakistan would collaborate closely with China to realize the objectives of sustainable development in order to usher in a period of prosperity and peace.

In order to meet the requirements of people, he underlined that the globe needed resilient infrastructure for effective, environmentally friendly, and low-carbon transportation options.He was grateful for China’s leading role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, emphasizing the vital importance of the transportation sector in particular.

President Zardari informed the Forum of Pakistan’s efforts, including the introduction of pink buses designed exclusively for women as a secure, cozy, and easily accessible form of public transit.

He emphasized that Pakistan’s rural accessibility to all-weather roads had significantly improved, reaching 92%. According to him, delivering vital services to the rural populace and encouraging sustainable development are two possible benefits of enhanced rural accessibility.The president informed the attendees of Pakistan’s struggles with climate change and the need for sustainable infrastructure maintenance.

He emphasized that over the previous five years, Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure including its roads, trains, bridges, and other vital networks has been severely damaged by catastrophic floods, intense rains, and other weather-related events, isolating millions of people, especially in rural areas.

According to President Zardari, Pakistan places a high priority on China’s support of sustainable development as well as its contribution to regional and international economic growth. He said that Pakistan welcomed the steps taken by China under President Xi Jinping and offered its support for the growth of sustainable transport cooperation among the member states’ transport authorities.
