Islamabad, Apr 25, 2025: In a significant move to alleviate traffic jams in Rawalpindi, the Punjab government has announced the construction of two additional underpasses along Mall Road.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to make the 26-kilometre stretch of road entirely signal-free, thereby improving traffic movement across the city.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz made a surprise visit to assess the ongoing construction of the GPO Underpass and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover.
During her visit, she commended the high standard of construction work and emphasized the importance of maintaining these standards.
She also instructed that trees be planted along both sides of the road to ensure a greener, more environmentally friendly atmosphere.
The Punjab Secretary of Communications and Works briefed the chief minister, explaining that these projects—being completed at an impressive pace—form part of the largest development initiative in the city’s history.
As per the officials, the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover, which originates from Khawaja Corporation, is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.3 billion.
The underpass project, which is estimated to cost Rs. 4.38 billion, will help ease traffic near important medical facilities such as AFIC and MH.
At present, 85% of the flyover and 60% of the underpass work has been completed. The underpass design includes a dedicated pedestrian walkway.
Once finished, the flyover will provide a direct link to both the Motorway and Rawalpindi Ring Road, benefiting around 79,000 vehicles daily. The entire project is expected to be completed by October 31.
