Islamabad, Nov 7: Telenor Pakistan Hosts Expert Panel on Green Energy Transition to Boost Climate Action Initiatives. In accordance with its dedication to promoting green energy initiatives, Telenor Pakistan organized a panel discussion titled “Climate Change and Green Energy Transition.” The event brought together industry experts and leaders to examine the essential part businesses play in tackling climate issues and fostering sustainable energy practices throughout Pakistan.

This panel discussion was co-hosted by The Pakistan Business Council’s Center of Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB) and took place at Telenor Campus 345 in Islamabad. Khurrum Ashfaque, CEO of Telenor Pakistan, opened the panel discussion by highlighting the urgent need to speed up the adoption of green energy. He stated, “Given our significant presence nationwide, companies like Telenor Pakistan must contribute to the shift toward sustainable energy solutions.”

Ashfaque further underscored the company’s dedication to sustainability, detailing the ambitious goal of cutting carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, using 2019 as a reference point. He also stressed the significance of involving partners in this initiative, declaring, “Beyond our own operations, we are actively engaging our partners to join us on this decarbonization journey, amplifying our impact across the value chain.”

Johan Martin Seland, Director and Head of Sustainability at Telenor Asia, delivered a keynote speech in which he provided important insights into Telenor’s sustainability plans and accomplishments.He highlighted that enhancing access to renewable energy is vital for the green transition, pointing out the necessity of a supportive policy framework that promotes predictable, long-term corporate power purchase agreements. He remarked that such regulations will stimulate investments in renewable energy initiatives, paving the way for a low-emission future in Pakistan.

The panel emphasized that collaboration across various sectors and strong sustainable policies are essential for realizing Pakistan’s renewable energy potential. By bringing together public and private stakeholders, these partnerships can drive innovation in clean energy technologies. This collective strategy not only speeds up the shift to renewable energy but also enhances Pakistan’s resilience against climate challenges, paving the way for a sustainable and secure future.

Led by Mr. Ahmad Usman Bhatti, Senior Manager of HSE & Sustainability at Telenor Pakistan, the panel included prominent speakers such as Ms. Sobiah Becker, Advisor for the Pak-German Climate & Energy Partnership at GIZ GmbH, Mr. Farhan Haider, Vice President of Network Design and Service Delivery at Telenor Pakistan, and Dr. Gul Muhammad Khan, Professor at UET and Director of the Centre for Intelligent Systems and Networks Research (CISNR).
