Islamabad, 23 April 2025: Shoaib Malik has addressed growing criticism over his dual role as both a mentor for PCB and an active player for Quetta Gladiators in PSL 10.
At 43, Malik’s participation in the league has sparked debate, with some questioning whether he should focus solely on nurturing young talent rather than continuing as a player.
However, during a media interaction in Lahore on Wednesday, Malik defended his position and reiterated his commitment to both roles.
Malik clarified that strategic decisions are made by the team management, while players are expected to deliver on the field.

He stressed that he remains focused on contributing wherever possible, both in performance and mentorship.
“It’s the think tank’s role to form strategies; ours is to execute them,” he said, noting that the team is striving to overcome previous shortcomings and improve results going forward.
Responding to questions about his fitness and relevance, Malik pointed out that he remains physically fit and capable of performing at a high level.
He also cited the terms of his contract, which permit him to continue playing.

He expressed disappointment that questions are often raised about his continued presence in the league, while others who are entirely absent from PSL go unnoticed.
Malik added that he respects those who support him and aims to offer the same in return.
Looking ahead, the former Pakistan captain called for reforms within the league.
He described the completion of PSL’s first decade as a key moment to reassess and enhance the tournament’s structure.
“With ten years of PSL behind us, now is the ideal time for the leadership and stakeholders to come together and plan for a stronger, more player-driven future,” Malik said.
He also remained optimistic about Quetta Gladiators’ chances this season, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to recover from a slow start.
