Islamabad, Mar 9, 2025: Google is set to introduce lock screen widgets to a wider range of Android 16 smartphones and tablets, expanding beyond their initial exclusivity to the Pixel Tablet.

This long-awaited feature, once a staple in early Android versions, was later phased out but is now making a comeback following the unveiling of Android 16.

Making a Return After Years

Lock screen widgets were highly favored in earlier iterations of Android but were eventually removed. Now, with the launch of Android 16 anticipated in June 2025, Google is reintroducing them.

Developers will soon have the ability to activate these widgets after the update is rolled out, offering users enhanced customization options for their lock screens with instant access to key information and frequently used apps.

Functionality of Lock Screen Widgets

Currently, on the Pixel Tablet, users can engage with lock screen widgets by swiping right.

However, the implementation on Android 16 smartphones may differ. Reports from Android Authority suggest that early testing indicates smartphones need to have Android’s screensaver mode enabled to utilize the feature—this mode activates only when the device is charging or docked.

Google is also granting developers greater flexibility in determining how widgets will function, allowing smartphone manufacturers to customize their activation methods.
