Islamabad, Apr 25, 2025: The rising temperatures have significantly impacted the cost of lemons in Rawalpindi, making this once-affordable fruit unaffordable for many families.

In the city’s open markets, the price of local (desi) lemons has surged to Rs. 1,000 per kilogram, with rates in some suburban areas climbing as high as Rs. 1,100 per kg.

Even the Chinese lemons, commonly referred to as “China dummy khatti” and generally perceived as of lower quality, are now being sold for Rs. 800 per kg.

Despite the inflated prices, both varieties of lemons are reportedly lacking in juice, leaving buyers frustrated.

According to Anjuman-e-Tajran Sabzi Mandi President Ghulam Qadir Mir, the early onset of intense heat has caused lemon demand to increase by almost three times the usual amount.

He explained, “The local crop is still in the early stages and hasn’t fully reached the market, resulting in a supply shortage.”

He also warned that prices are likely to remain high throughout the week, although a price reduction may occur next week as both local and imported lemon stocks become more available.
