Islamabad, Feb 11: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, during his address at the World Governments Summit, emphasized the need for strengthened climate financing, technology sharing, and urged private investors to explore Pakistan’s green energy and infrastructure opportunities.
He highlighted the importance of international partnerships and financial support, stating that achieving Pakistan’s energy transition alone would require an investment of $100 billion. While Pakistan is committed to mobilizing its own resources and policy reforms, global collaboration remains essential for sustainable growth.
The prime minister also discussed Pakistan’s economic achievements over the last year, including a significant drop in inflation (to 2.4% in January, the lowest in nine years) and the capping of interest rates at 12%. He outlined the government’s national economic transformation plan, “Uraan Pakistan,” which focuses on exports, climate change, energy, infrastructure, and empowerment. Energy security and sustainability are central to this agenda, with Pakistan aiming for 60% of its energy mix to be clean by 2030 and transitioning 30% of its vehicles to electric mobility.

He shared that Pakistan’s southern region holds significant untapped wind energy potential (50,000 MW), while hydro projects in the north will add 30,000 MW of clean energy. The government is promoting solar energy through policy reforms, tax exemptions, and incentives for investments. Pakistan is also enhancing its investment landscape, particularly in sectors like renewable energy, technology, digital economy, and agriculture.
The prime minister spoke about efforts to modernize agriculture through eco-friendly innovations, such as solar-powered systems, climate-smart sensors, and drought-resistant crops. He mentioned sending 1,000 young agriculture graduates to China for training in advanced agricultural techniques.
He also expressed Pakistan’s commitment to creating a sustainable and prosperous future for its people, underlining the importance of infrastructure development, economic diversification, and human development. Pakistan aims to actively shape its future, not just inherit it.
Regarding the Gaza situation, the prime minister condemned the violence and reiterated Pakistan’s support for a two-state solution, advocating for the creation of an independent Palestine with pre-1967 borders and Al-Quds as its capital. He also praised the UAE leadership for hosting the summit, recognizing Dubai as a hub of global commerce and innovation.
In summary, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s speech emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to green energy, economic transformation, sustainable development, and regional peace, urging global cooperation to tackle these challenges.
