Islamabad, 23 April 2025:  South African footballer Sinamandla Zondi has died after collapsing on the field shortly before the start of a second-tier match. 

The 22-year-old defender was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The cause of his sudden collapse has not yet been determined.

The heartbreaking incident led to the suspension of the match between Durban City and Milford FC, which was abandoned at halftime.

Zondi had been preparing to play in the fixture when the tragedy struck, sending shockwaves through the local football community.

Durban City paid tribute to Zondi in an official statement, describing him not only as a skilled footballer but as a beloved figure within the club.

Known affectionately as “Sgora,” Zondi was remembered as a teammate, friend, and source of inspiration.

The club extended its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and pledged to offer continued support to those affected by the loss.

Zondi began his professional career in September 2021 and had since become a regular presence in Durban City’s squad.

The team currently leads the standings in South Africa’s second division and had been in strong contention for promotion to the top tier.

Club officials, fellow players, and fans across the country have been left deeply saddened by the young defender’s passing.

Many have expressed their grief and shared memories of Zondi’s determination, humility, and passion for the game.

Support systems have also been put in place for players and staff coping with the emotional impact of the loss.
